September 23rd-29th

Is this really the end of September? It has felt like August for so long that I think some are feeling confused. Let's just hope it keeps up for our Cross Country meet in a few weeks.

Reading – We have finished the Tiger Rising and have spent this week looking at themes of the story, and looking at how small parts of the story relate to the whole story.  Next week we will continue with these lessons.  Please ask your children about the story, it was amazing, and they are doing such a good job with it.
This coming week we will also be focusing on written responses to reading.

Writing – We had our first writing celebration of the year.  As writing is a challenge for many of us, I have given some extra writing time.  We worked with the students from Miss Raimo’s and Miss Harlacker’s class and celebrated our first writing milestone.  All students who were not prepared were given some extra time at the start of class, so that they could participate.   As we continue to prepare for publishing, we will be starting our second narrative.

Social Studies – This week in our government study we will be focusing on the election process.

Math- We started unit 2 and have been working with factors, finding area, and building arrays. I have started a new plan with Homework. Students have time built into their day to complete it in class. If it does not get finished, they must complete it before class the following day. I use it as a teaching tool the following day, so it is important that it gets completed, it just may already be done when they get home.

Science- We wrapped up Matter today with a pancake activity. Ask your students about it. We are also moving through a variety of activities that help solidify our knowledge. There are a few experiments, readings, videos, etc. Next week will be our Solar System unit.

Newsworthy:

Midterms – Please note that we are sending the midterms home with our check in, so that you, as parents and the students have the opportunity to see how they are doing, and what they need to work on for each subject.  Please note that grades are constantly changing, so this is just a heads up, and we hope it is helpful for all of you.

Note home- There is a note coming home with midterms that shares websites with you. Please take a look at all that is offered to your child.

Parent Visitation- Next Friday is Parent Visitation- If you are planning on visiting, please complete the form and send it back (or a note) this is for our office and custodial staff.

Mrs. Lankford----Unfortunately, I will also be out that day and the day prior. I will be in Baltimore at a National Science Conference. I am excited about the chance to learn even more about my favorite subject, but I am sad that I will miss all of you. If you feel the need to see my room in action with me here, please let me know and we can set up a time for you to visit again.
