August 28th- September 1st

We made it through our first full week and into September. Hopefully the three day weekend helped everyone relax and recharge for the upcoming week. I know we were tired at the end of our first full week. The kids worked hard and set a good tone for the work expectation all year.

Reading – What a great week, we have had.  We finished all of our DRA’s.  We are working on learning about characters.  We are reading 2 read alouds and loving them both!

Writing – We have brainstormed ideas for our first narrative writing.  Our focus this week has been to build our characters.  This coming week we will start to organize and plan our story.

Spelling – There was no spelling test this week.  I am going to review the students’ homework.  If they were able to understand and complete the contract they will have no homework next week.  If they were not clear on the expectations, I will write a note of explanation, and give them next week to try again.

Math- We started to get into Everyday Math and our math workshop time. Many students were not used to the layout of class and the expectations and responsibilities. However, by day 3, the students saw the value in getting their work finished and many felt accomplished!!

Science- This week we completed a few science labs as we talked about the Scientific Method. Ask your students about milk rainbows if you need a conversation starter. They are all excited to spend a good amount of time everyday in Science and as this next week closes we will be in our first official unit of Matter.

Noteworthy-
As we are getting deeper into our curriculum, the students need their headphones a bit more. If you would like to send headphones or earbuds to school with your child, please do so as soon as possible. As we said at Back to School Night, there will be ear buds available for students who do not have their own. Thank You!
